Original Anouncement

A rare Jawanese shadow puppet (wayang kulit) performance ceremony is to be conducted in the Stables Market, Camden, upon nightfall on the evening of Friday September 22 2006. Rehearsals in preparation have been held every Sunday evening through the summer.

Thierry Durieux, proprietor of Kalimantan Creations, and the Sekar Gedhogan Community Gamelan Orchestra would like to invite everyone interested in community, performance, ceremony, traditions, shadow puppetry, world music and so on, to come and take part in our rare wayang kulit ceremony. The performance will be conducted by Bram Prijosusilo and the Sekar Gedhogan Community Gamelan Orchestra. It will take place after darkness and will probably last around one hour. The story will be a modern Jawanese twist attached to the Indian Mahabharata epic and as the traditional plays it will have Gods and Demons and clowns with foul language and imagined violence. Since this might be disturbing for young children, parental guidance is advised.

The Sekar Gedhogan Gamelan Orchestra is a not-for-profit gathering of music enthusiasts based on the cobblestones in front of Unit 92 in the Stables Market in Camden. It was formed in the winter of 2004-2005 as an offering for the community around Camden and the market, using the gamelan instruments and the wayang kulit puppet set in the private collection of Thierry Durieux. During the summer last year and also this year we have been conducting weekly Sunday evening gamelan workshops with pencak-silat martial arts in preparation for the Friday September 22 '06 shadow puppet performance.

The Sekar Gedhogan Community Gamelan Orchestra has performed in Cecil Court and in Camden, London, and also in last year's Beyond the Border story-telling festival at St Donats castle in Wales. Updates of activities and past and future events can be checked out on www.kalimantancreations.co.uk in the 'Events and Happenings' section. As usual all our rehearsals are in the public and amount to a performance or a happening in themselves. Therefore everyone is also invited to come on any fine Sunday evening at 8 P.M to join us outdoors in music, dance, and community energy.
