Recycled Bronze Sea Shell Collection |
|
In 1989 Thierry Durieux acquired 1.25 tons or scrap bronze and lived for a month in a bronze casting village in East Java casting shells and other objects inspired by the sea.
He also bought two giant clams from the pearl divers of Raas island near Madura, and cast two giant clams in bronze using the lost wax technique which has been developed in Java since pre-history. Theirry cast 100 copies of each small shell and working with a welder in East Java made them into mirror frames, candlesticks and bathroom accessories.
The masterpiece of this casting and welding project is the pride of Thierry’s Kalimantan Creations shop in the Stables Market in Camden, a lighted mirror frame made of bronze shells and seahorses. Over the years many people have visited Kalimantan Creations and call it ‘the best shop in Camden’.
Certainly the lighted shell mirror at the back of the shop is one of the objects that make Kalimantan Creations ‘the best shop in Camden’ and in our opinion it is worth a trip to The Stables Market in London just to see it. |
